Mah-251: 6.6 oz Banded Calcite, Mahoney Mining Area (NM), Fluorescent Minerals

L
ast fall we dug this gorgeous rock out of a sand & dirt-covered mine dump at a small unnamed prospect in the area.
In our daylight photos the rock has crystals of gorgeous pale yellow calcite imbedded in whitish and beige-colored aragonite (photos #6 & 7).
The calcite found in the area of the Tres Hermanas Mountains is unique in that much of it originally crystallized as aragonite, some of which subsequently inverted to the more stable calcite polymorph.
Finding unusual rocks like this one is why the Mahoney Mining Area is one of our favorite rockhounding locations.
Under short wave lamp the
calcite crystals glow
red,
and the aragonite glows
phosphorescent
pale blue,
with a partial coating of
green opal
(photos #1-3).
Using our long wave Convoy S2 flashlight, the calcite bands glow
pale yellow-orange
and the aragonite
white
