Duke Paoa Kahanamoku, at Waikiki Beach, circa 1939? Known as the 'Father of Surfing', he was born in Honolulu August 24, 1890. Duke was named after his father, who was named for the Duke of Edinburgh, who visited Hawaii in 1869. He was also a world famous Olympic swimmer,  held world records, won gold medals, and competed  in the Stockholm (1911), Antwerp (1920), and Paris (1924) Olympics. Surfers around the globe credit him with introducing surfing to the Mainland and Australia in the years 1912-14. In 1911 he started the Hui Nalu Surf Club. Duke rode massive koa wood boards, 16 feet long and weighing over 100 pounds. In 1917 he rode a thirty foot wave for over a mile at Waikiki. In 1960 he was appointed 'Hawaii's Ambassador of Aloha'. He was also inducted in the swimming and Olympic Hall of fame and was Sheriff of Honolulu (1934-60) and died a Hawaiian surfing legend  Jan 22, 1968. Duke was probably the most famous Hawaiian  the world has ever known.
PRINT INFORMATION: Most of our prints are sharper than many of the lower resolution samples seen here. Please be aware that many of the older original images were not high quality and may be grainy or have some visible flaws. All mounted 8x10" prints are shrink-wrapped and come with a detailed caption label on the back, (or separate with unmounted photos), with several paragraphs of interesting detailed historical and photography information. This  makes our prints different from other sellers and very popular with buyers.
Mounted prints are cropped to fit on a single 8x10" mat board and are not double matted cut-outs. Margins and borders are edges of the print, or the color of the mat. We print on long lasting lithographic, giclee professional glossy or mat paper using archival inks, or real photographic paper. Some prints are from black and white or hand colored originals, others have been ©colorized by our artist.
