Details:
Here's a huge, beautiful chunk of unusual amber that would make a fantastic specimen, or provide superb lapidary potential. This comes from rock strata exposed by coal mining in Indonesia. Though it's called black, the color is really a translucent deep golden to reddish brown, more like cola. It has a strong blue fluorescence, best under longwave UV; it also shows yellow phosphorescence after strong UV exposure. Some of this material (the very expensive kind!) looks blue in sunlight from the natural ultraviolet; this piece isn't quite that bright, but it's real amber, 23 million years old, beautiful in daylight and exciting under UV. Note: this amber fluoresces very brightly under the new filtered longwave UV LED flashlights (i.e. Convoy S2 or C8).
NOTE: TO VIEW FLUORESCENCE, YOU NEED A QUALITY ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT WITH A UV FILTER!
The better the UV source, the better fluorescent minerals look. Cheap "UV" flashlights without filters will not provide satisfactory results!
The photos here are taken using Convoy S2 and C8 (longwave-365)
and UV Systems SuperBright II (shortwave-254) lamps, metered
and exposed to show fluorescent response to best advantage.
Key factors include lamp wattage, UV spectrum and filtration, as well as distance from lamp to specimen. For best results with any UV source, observe against a dark, non-fluorescent, non-reflective background, in complete darkness with eyes adapted. For extended viewing, use protective UV-absorbing goggles.
